Another Cattails Series Piece

Back to the board and a little looser....  It seems that if I work things out on board and really do my best at abstracting a piece, the next one on linen goes on a little more contemporary as well, so maybe I'll do a few pieces on board, then finish a series in linen, etc. etc. etc.  Eventually, I'm sure the two styles will merge and it won't look like I'm two personalities!!  You would think after twenty years of doing this, I would not be so afraid to start EVERY piece - you would think!  Just the opposite, I am more afraid than ever and more particular than ever.  Ready, set - JUMP!

  1. Love this one, too! I can almost feel the cold, brisk air. Fall and winter painting are my favorite, and this one is perfect! I can't believe you are afraid, Shanna -- you are a brilliant painter! I love the one painting that I own of yours more every day!! and it is not an autumn scene -- you can truly paint it all!

  3. Shanna, your painting is wonderful! I love the texture you achieved with layers of thick paint. Did you use a palette knife along with big brushes? It is amazing to zoom in and see your brush and knife work then to zoom out and see it all come together magically. It is encouraging for me to read that you are afraid to start each painting. I feel the same way. It gives me courage to jump in anyway. I can only hope that someday I will have beautiful results from my effort like you.

  4. Hi Dianne! I LOVE my palette knife! Being a watercolorist first, I have had to play tricks on myself to get the paint down a little heavier. If I put it on with the palette knife and then use my brushes to get the strokes, direction and edges, I'm a lot happier in the end! I love the edges a palette knife brings to the table too and the texture from them is just delicious!. The important element for me is the contrast between the thick and the thin, I wouldn't want my work to be only one or the other. Glad to hear you are jumping in - that's my motto - jumping in feet first!
